Benizakura (Crimson Sakura)
I named this piece “Benizakura (Crimson Sakura)” because I painted cherry blossoms in full bloom upon vivid crimson washi paper.
The deep crimson represents vitality, passion, and the strength that lies within. By placing delicate cherry blossoms against such a bold background, I wanted to express a uniquely Japanese sense of beauty—where strength and fleeting elegance exist in harmony.
Cherry blossoms are beautiful not only when they are in full bloom, but also as they gently fall. Through Benizakura, I hope to convey the importance of cherishing each passing moment, while expressing my wish that Japan’s traditional craftsmanship will continue to bloom for generations to come.
Every bamboo rib is carefully assembled, and every thread is hand-laced by skilled artisans, creating a one-of-a-kind Gifu Wagasa.
Benizakura is more than an umbrella—it is Functional Art, carrying the spirit of Japanese tradition and timeless beauty into the future.
